Women in Technology Awards 2005

In a ceremony in London on 28 October, the prize for the Women & Technology Award 2005 was awarded to Jackie Edwards, from De Montfort University for her work in in the Women's Access to Information Technology (WAIT) course.

The awards, hosted by BlackBerry maker RIM and women's networking group Aurora, aim to recognise professional achievement by UK women in the technology industry.

Meg Munn, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Deputy Minister for Women and Equality, said that the under-representation of women in technology was a problem and that younger women in particular needed role models to encourage them to think about careers in the profession.

The Awards are proudly supported by a number of leading edge organisations, all of who have technology at their core and are open to corporate, public sector, academic and entrepeneurial women, as well as to organisations of all sizes, both from within and outside the technology sector.

Gillian Kent, managing director of MSN, won an award for women in the private sector. The judges particularly noted her work to protect children from online predators.

Meanwhile Sue McDougall, commercial and business controls executive at IBM UK, received the best mentor award for her work encouraging others within the company.

"I would like to congratulate all the women who have been put forward for these awards," said Meg Munn, Deputy Minister for Women. Being recognised in this way is a great achievement and events like these can help raise awareness of women's success and promote female role models in a traditionally male dominated field."
